The game of cricket was introduced to India by European merchant sailors in the 18th-century. India played its first cricket test match as a national team only on 25 June 1932 at Lord's in England. These players were responsible for the back-to-back series wins in 1971 in the West Indies and then in England, under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar. Gavaskar scored 774 runs in the West Indian series while Dilip Sardesai's 112 played a big part in their one Test win. In the 1980's Indian cricket found stroke makers such as the wristy Mohammed Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar and all-rounder Ravi Shastri.
One Day Cricket became more popular when India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983, defeating the then favourites West Indies in the final under the leadership of Kapil Dev. Later India went on to win the World Championship of Cricket and also the Asia Cup. Then came the greatest batsment in the world Sachin Tendulkar and the likes of Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. Sachin Tendulkar becuase of this great batting skills, agreesive batting soon became an idol for all Cricket loving fans not only in India with also all over the world.
